The Grade II listed structure https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1367096 built of Yorkshire stone, was opened in 1884 as a library following the destruction of the town's originally library in a fire the year before. It was extended in 1903 and 1913 to include a Museum and Art Gallery. It was refurbished in 2002.
