The Leitrim Road runs along the western boundary of the Castlewellan Park demesne. The hills in the background are part of the Slieve Croob range. Dolly's Brae can be seen in the middle ground descending towards Ballyward. Dolly's Brae was the scene of serious civil commotion on 12th July 1849 when 1500 armed Orangemen returning from an Orange Day demonstration at Tollymore Park marched through a predominantly Catholic district and were engaged by 500 Catholic Ribbonmen. In the fierce fighting which ensued the Orangemen carried the day. Dolly's Brae retains a prominent place in Co Down Loyalist mythology. The link below is to a radio documentary dealing with the two versions - Protestant and Catholic - of the Dolly's Brae incident. http://www.rte.ie/radio1/doconone/2009/0630/646153-brae/
