Stringers Barn

Stringers Barn was one of a number of small farms which eked out an existence on the edge of the heathlands between Guildford and Woking. Many of them put their cattle and other animals out to graze on the surrounding commons. The commons were also a source of bracken, which was cut at the end of September or early October for bedding for animals and for covering potato clamps (which in turn were covered by heather turfs). Heather turfs were also cut by locals and then rolled up and dried indoors to be burned on an open fire to heat their homes. (From the Surrey Advertiser web site.)
