Avishays and the Monmouth Tower

There has been some sort of dwelling here since 1316 but the present house (Grade II listed), which has been altered several times, originated in the 17C. Once home to the Browne family, they sold it to the Sealy family who sold it on again to a Chard solicitor, Edward Clarke in 1859. The clock tower behind on the hill is known as the Monmouth Tower or the Castle. The clock came from Highclere Castle in Hampshire.
