The farrier is a specialist in equine hoof care and frequently undertakes the shoeing of horses. In the past most people would have been familiar with the trade, particularly in rural areas. So giving a pub this name and illustrating it with an appropriate sign would have made the pub easily recognisable to the many people who could not read. Although it's unlikely that any pubs have been given this name in recent times, there are still quite a number with the name scattered around the country. Image
