Axminster railway station is a few minutes' walk from the town centre. The main building was designed by the London & South Western Railway (LSWR) architect Sir William Tite and Edward Clifton in mock Gothic style. The station opened in July 1860 when the LSWR opened its Exeter Extension from Yeovil Junction to Exeter Queen Street. In 2017, the station located between Crewkerne station and Honiton station is served by South West Trains London Waterloo to Exeter St Davids trains on the West of England Main Line. The line in this area is mainly single track. Trains are timetabled to pass each other here at the twin track station.
