Holsworthy is a real workaday North Devon market town. It is proud of the fact that it is an Ancient Port Town, although it is many miles from the sea. The word "Port" in fact refers to a walled or enclosed town where goods could be harboured safely. The town suffered badly during the Foot & Mouth crisis, but it survived and its livestock markets are once again held on a twice-weekly basis.
