The sign outside says 'University of Cumbria - Caldewgate Library'. Built in 2002 by Northumbria University, which had a campus in Carlisle for about 12 years but withdrew from the city in 2004. The University of Central Lancashire took over until 2007, when it transferred the campus to the newly formed University of Cumbria. Evidently a library at this location did not fit the requirements of the current university, because it was put up for sale in 2015. When this photo was taken in August 2012 there appeared to be no activity inside, which seemed unusual even during the vacation.
