This memorial is in Thomson Close on the site of the old Bridport Hospital. The inscription on this side has been eroded by the weather and reads "In memory of his wife Susanne Marie Freidericke this lamp was presented to the Bridport Hospital by Joseph Thompson Stephens". The reverse has an inscription "Also of his son Sidney Thompson Stephens (late Lt Cdr RN) 2nd Lieut Devonshire Regt DCM, MC, who was killed in a successful attack at Polygon Wood, Belgium, October 9th 1917." He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot memorial to those missing in action. The rear is dated 1918. Subsequent research reveals that Susanne died aged 68 in March 1918, son Sidney was 43 when killed in October of that year and Joseph died the next year in March aged 78. Tragic. Joseph was a Twine and Net manufacturer, a Treasurer of the Hospital, JP and former Mayor of Bridport.
