It would seem the pub opened about the time the horse racing on Beccles Common, was coming to an end. It's name and proximity to Common Lane was an obvious attraction to racegoers. But it was a short lived venture and closed after about 10 years in the 1860s. During the years it was open the street was called Ingate Road, but in 1936 changed to Grove Road to avoid confusion with Ingate Street.
