In a fenced enclosure set back from Bastion Road. The white box on a stand is a Stevenson Screen, designed to shield meteorological instruments against precipitation and direct radiation from outside sources, while still allowing air to circulate freely inside. It thus provides a standardised environment, allowing the readings to be compared with those taken in similar conditions elsewhere. Behind the screen is a rain gauge. If this is a standard weather station, daily readings at taken here at 9am (10am during British Summer Time). Standard averages of air temperature, humidity and precipitation are based on 30 years of data.
