Looking east from Platform 2. This island platform between the up and down lines allowed passengers to change to or from the Lakeside branch without having to use the subway. The original Furness Railway station was a terminus facing west, built on higher ground to the north. The through station opened in 1858, and was rebuilt in 1874.
