A terrace of 'colony' houses, the first of ten developments of ‘flatted cottages for the better class of mechanics’ built in Edinburgh from 1850-1903. The doors in view lead to the ground-floor houses; access to the upper floor houses is from doors on the other side, via internal stairs. The other developments have access by external stairs.
