The prosaic finishing post at Upper Wharfedale School of the 61 mile route from Ingleton. In 1978 299 competitors finished, having visited the 21 checkpoints on a moorland route that necessitates some travel during darkness, during which time they are required to keep together in groups of four. These competitors achieved a time of 22 hours 55 minutes. First finishers were Alan Heaton and Mike Walford jointly in 13h 27m.
