The church of St James the Great is the principal place of worship in Winscombe, and has been for centuries. There are clues to an older church of some description, but there is documentary evidence of consecration in 1236. The present tower structure dates from the fifteenth century and is a typical Somerset four-storey design; it is 30m (100') high and houses bells cast by the famous Bilbie family of the county.
