A free school was founded in 1613 by Peter Hill and Robert Bell. The building dates from around 1700 although the school only moved into it in 1797. The costume of the two figures of schoolchildren date from around 1700, although they were added to the front of the building when the school moved here in 1797. A close up of the charity children can be seen at http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/5258008 The watch-house next door dates from 1821. Behind is part of the churchyard of St Mary the Virgin Church, Rotherhithe. A very full history of the school can be found at http://russiadock.blogspot.co.uk/2014/01/peter-hills-school.html
