Warner Gothard bought Seckar Wood in 1923 and left it to the people of Barnsley and Wakefield in 1940. He built a swimming pool here in the 1930s and also this summerhouse, which he never completed. Seckar Wood became an SSSI in 1979 because of its unusual mix of both dry and wet lowland heathland and birch / oak woodland. The eastern end is ancient woodland, changed little since the 1480s. There several permissive paths but no public rights of way.
