Approach viaduct on the Widnes side to the railway bridge over the Mersey. It opened to traffic in 1869 after there was a gap in the network for many years. At the moment the Mersey is like the Forth - there is a venerable railway bridge, a 1960s road bridge and a three tower modern road bridge under construction.
