The stone and bronze pinnacle to the left was sited here in 2008 in modern recognition of the fact that Stamford was once home to one of the twelve Eleanor Crosses erected under the instructions of King Edward I when the embalmed body of Queen Eleanor was moved through twelve stages from Lincoln to London in 1290. The original Eleanor Cross in Stamford disappeared long ago with only small fragments surviving.
