Located on the corner of Pembroke Gardens and built in 1876-77 as a private residence called Brooker Hall for the Vallance family. The family ceased using the building for residential purposes in 1914 and was subsequently used between 1917-19 as residential quarters for German POWs assigned to labour at the Hove Gas Works. On the death of the original owner's wife in 1924 the estate trustees favoured selling the house to Hove council as a museum which eventually occurred in 1925 and the museum opening to the public in 1927. To offset the cost the grounds on the eastern side of the house were sold to developers for housing. The structure in the garden is Jaipur Gateway commissioned as a gift for Queen Victoria by the Maharajah of Jaipur in 1886 and presented to the museum in 1926.
