These were part of the solution to the post-World War II housing shortage in Britain - prefabricated houses, delivered to their sites in sections, known still today as prefabs. Over 150,000 of them built in the 1944 - 1949 period although relatively few remain today. These seventeen, standing in Wake Green Road at its junction with Brook Lane in Moseley, were among the 4000 built in Birmingham and in 1998 sixteen of them were Grade II listed by English Heritage. The ones shown are the Phoenix type - steel-framed three bay houses with two bedrooms. One or two were opened to the public in September this year for one day. The Prefab Museum, in conjunction with the Birmingham Conservation Trust and the Twentieth Century Society, are working together to ensure their continued survival.
