These days the house and grounds are a luxurious country hotel and retreat for members. It began in 1544 as the estate of the Hippisley family, who created much of the present structures, including landscaping by Humphry Repton, in the eighteenth century - and held it until 1956. The place then became disused, finally passing into the hands of the Rees-Mogg family. They funded a much-needed refurbishment and opened the hotel in 1982. These wrought iron gates were originally installed on Merstham House in Kent, but came to Somerset in 1981.
