Wyndham House

Wyndham House. The Garden Village of Glyn Cory lies on the south side of the River Ely, opposite and overlooking the village of Peterston-super-ely. Dating from the early twentieth century, the development was influenced by the ideas of Ebenezer Howard and planned by Thomas Adams in consultation with the garden designer Thomas Mawson. It was sponsored by John and Reginald Cory, well-known Cardiff coal and shipping magnates, and was one of a number of south Wales projects designed to provide good quality planned housing for company workers. The 121ha site was intended to include 65ha of housing, 32ha for golf courses and 24ha for allotments and small holdings. Some 1400 houses were proposed, with an eventual population of 5-6,000 inhabitants. The central axis of the scheme was Main Avenue, a wide road with a bridge (now removed) over the River Ely at its north-western end, with grass- and tree-lined crescents laid out along the slope, only three of which materialised – in fact, by 1914 only 22 houses had been erected. Although other houses were added later, only a small part of the overall scheme was ultimately realised.
