Begun circa 1150 and altered a century later, the building has an interesting history. Originally a fortified merchant's house, it was hired to the Borough in the 14th century and purchased in 1552. It has been a prison, a town hall, a police station, court house and toll office. Restored in 1883 and again in 1961 after it was bombed in 1941, Now a museum and library.
