The Stewartry Museum is part of Dumfries and Galloway Museums Service and displays the local and natural history of Kirkcudbrightshire. The name 'Stewartry of Kirkcudbright' dates from the 14th century, when Archibald the Grim, Lord of Galloway (1328-1400) appointed a steward to collect his revenues and administer justice from what is now Kirkcudbrightshire. The purpose-built museum opened in 1893. It is a Category C listed building.
