On the corner is the traditional Stratton Bakery. In 2003 or so I was at my mothers on a bright winter afternoon and said I was taking a friend out for tea. She said not to go too far as snow was forecast. As we rarely have snow and even rarely lasting for long I didn't take the warning seriously, and took my friend there. As we left it began to snow about 5.30pm, and by the time we reached Northwood had left a heap of snow which begun to freeze, and the traffic ground to a halt. We stopped for food and drink in a couple of pubs, and got back home, about ten miles beyond, at 2am. Many roads were so icy vehicles couldn't get up the hills and backed up for the entire side of London. Never again.
