Originally a mercer's dwelling and storehouse, this may be one of the oldest shops in Wales, though its exact age is unclear. The Royal Commission surveyed the house in 1988. Various details suggest an early 17th-century date, though anomalies in the plan suggest that the building may be a reconstruction of an earlier house. The name Royal House is based on the tradition that King Charles I stayed here when travelling to Chester in 1643. Grade II (star) listed in 1952.
