The Great Exhibition of 1851 highlighted an urgent need for innovation in art and design to serve the needs of industry. In Wolverhampton, it was recognised that improvements were essential for international success. This led to local exhibitions of arts and crafts at the Wolverhampton Mechanics Institutes, which together with the School of Art became the foundation of the University of Wolverhampton.
