Croft Gardens from the north

Croft Gardens is a U-shaped close composed of three ranges of low-density housing set back from the Barton Road, in the Newnham ward of Cambridge. Designed in the Art-Deco or Moderne style by the Indian architect D.C. Wadhwa (who also designed the nearby Image) it dates from around 1936. The well-maintained topiary is an interesting component to the streetscape of this main road approach to the city from the south-west. Behind it can be seen the south and west ranges and just a glimpse of the east range. In 2016 King's College applied for permission to demolish the gardens to provide higher-density housing blocks.
