I happened to be taking a short-cut through the churchyard when the French inscriptions on these stones caught my eye. I have on occasion seen Luftwaffe graves in English churchyards, but memorials to 'the enemy' of earlier wars must be pretty rare. The stones - five of them - are arranged in a neat line, close to the boundary of the yard, north-west of the church. This stone commemorates Enseigne Joseph Riouffe - 'enseigne de vaisseau' being a naval rank roughly equivalent to sub-lieutenant in the Royal Navy.
