Even as late as the mid 1990s, more than 1200 sheep would be shorn here, towards mid-July. Since then, as a result of agricultural policy and low prices for the animals, (and foot-and-mouth in 2001), the numbers have been deteriorating steadily. At present (2008) the count is around six hundred, and can be dealt with by three contract shearers in one day.
