By 1936, the Scheme's Architect Harry Redfern was in poor health and "The Redfern" was designed by his assistant Joseph Seddon - although there was some input from Redfern. Situated on a "green-field" site in a largely residential area, "The Redfern" was built by J & R Bell and opened on 1 October 1940 - largely to serve the some 3,000 RAF personnel stationed at the Kingstown equipment depot. Named in honour of Mr Redfern, it included an number of the Scheme's specialities - particularly a bowling green for the healthy entertainment of the working man! Sold to private ownership in 1973, it is still trading - although recent press reports indicate the bowling green has been sold for private housing. Photograph is for record only - I have no connection with this business and cannot advise on its products or services.
