From 1883, James Cornford, Head Gardener to the Powell-Cotton family of Quex House, worked the productive garden, including the Victorian Walled Garden, to the highest level. By 1902 the gardens had over 20 staff. In 1923 Cornford retired and within a few years the garden became an uneconomic burden. The staff were reduced to just two and the Walled Garden was let for commercial growing.
