Originally an Anglican church, built 1876-8 by architect Edward Pearson Peterson. The parish always had an Anglo-Catholic tradition. St Mary's was damaged by fire in 1947, and the separate vestry building to north demolished for housing in 1985. The church itself was closed by the Church of England in 2004, and sold to St Stephen the Great Orthodox Church although they seem to have retained the name St Mary Magdalene for the congregation. It was listed grade 2 at the time of closure (list entry 1390998 contains a detailed architectural description).
