Field Marshal William Edmund Ironside, 1st Baron Ironside of Archangel and of Ironside, was born on 6 May 1880 in Edinburgh, died on 22 September 1959 in London, lived at Morley Old Hall (located between Deopham Green and Attleborough), and is buried in Hingham cemetery in South Norfolk. After serving in the South African War, he commanded Allied forces in WW1 in northern Russia (1918) and later in northern Persia (1920). He subsequently commanded forces in India (1928–31) and in the Middle East. At the beginning of WW2, Ironside was chief of the imperial general staff (1939–40). He was promoted to field marshal in 1940 and commanded the British Home Defence Forces.
