Nineteenth century benchmark on Christ Church

This benchmark on the south-east face of the church was established in 1848 during the First primary levelling of England & Wales, and was levelled with a height of 427.0080 feet [130.1520 metres] above mean sea level (Liverpool datum). It was included as a side level on the Birmingham to London levelling line. The surveyor's description was "No. 308(a). Christ Church, Chipping Barnet. Bolt in East jamb of small door ; 1.99 ft. above centre of road" (Public Abstract p.228).
