Ouston Airfield Opened in March 1941 as a fighter station and Sector HQ in 13 Group, Fighter Command. Newcastle airport was located at Ouston with effect from 1 Nov 1965 until the end of March 1966 while Newcastle Airport underwent alterations. (Confirmed by a search of meteorological observations from Newcastle (Woolsington) airport in 1965 and 1966 held at the National Met. Archives at Exeter by Martin Young. Many thanks to Martin for sharing this information, he adds "Ironically, according to the Newcastle Evening Chronicle of 2 April 1966, the very first day of operation of the new airport at Woolsington (2 April 1966) was severely disrupted by deep snow on the runway following a major snowfall the previous night. A number of flights were cancelled.") The site was taken over by the Army shortly afterwards and forms part of Albemarle Barracks.
