Built 1853-4 for the 7th Viscount Downe of Cowick Hall to the design of the eminent Victorian architect William Butterfield, along with the adjacent school and vicarage. The design, at least externally, is much plainer than Butterfield's principal works, such as Keble College, Oxford. Listed Grade II. There are similar trios in the neighbouring villages of Pollington and Hensall.
