Fawley Refinery was established in 1921 by the Atlantic, Gulf and West Indies Oil Company on 270 hectares of land adjacent to Southampton Water. The site was acquired by Esso in 1925. It was rebuilt and extended in 1951 and is now the largest oil refinery in the United Kingdom, and one of the most complex refineries in Europe. Crude oil is transported to Fawley by sea in tankers which berth at the refinery's mile-long marine terminal, which handles around 2000 ship movements and 22 million tonnes of crude oil and other products every year. The Fawley refinery site also houses a chemical facility operated by ExxonMobil and Nalco which produces approximately 750,000 tonnes of chemical products every year.
