The town was given a Royal Charter by King John in 1200 to hold a weekly market. The original market hall, on this site, was built in the late 15th century and demolished in 1772. The present hall opened in 1883. It appears that two fixed stalls or single-storey buildings outside the front of the building have been removed, which does improve the visibility of the whole of the hall's frontage.
