This is Britain's oldest smock mill and possibly dates from the 1650s. Despite claims that it moved here in 1821 it would now appear to have always been here. The mill now has four common sails but did for a period have a pair of patent sails. Winding is by fantail. The mill no longer turns due to its age and frailty. This shows the bottom of the mainshaft and the wooden compass arm great spur wheel. There are two stone nuts driving the stones overdrift.
