The history of Presbyterianism in Armagh extends back to the seventeenth century and was often fractious with splits and succession common in congregations and the setting up of new churches. The Scotch Church, built in 1840 in the Palladian style, was the result of a doctrinal split in 1837 among the members of Armagh's First Presbyterian congregation. The adoption of the name Scotch Church was intended to show the new congregations allegiance to the true font of Presbyterianism. Image]
