Midlands seems a curious name for a farm in this rather remote part of Essex. To the left of the road there are abandoned farm buildings http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3970989 and a big overgrown farmyard. Brick walls enclose what would once have been a bullock yard. So livestock were kept here - in contrast to present-day Dengie farming, which is almost entirely arable (cereal production).
