The station was named Strata Florida after the nearby abbey. Here the Manchester and Milford Railway, after travelling over 3km in a straight line across Cors Caron (Tregaron Bog), turned sharply to the left and headed for Aberystwyth. The "main line" was intended to turn right to head for the Cambrian Mountains and Llanidloes, but was never built. The line is now a nature trail.
