These provide your path surfacing on the way down from Newton Road to the towpath of the Tame Valley Canal. The wording on each slab reads 'DANGER C.E.G.B. CABLES 132,000 volts' (CENTRAL ELECTRICITY GENERATING BOARD) The canal was authorised in 1839 and it opened in 1844, the engineer being James Walker. It is 8.5 miles long with the 13 Perry Barr Locks and runs from Tame Valley Junction with the Walsall Canal. At Salford Junction, its other terminus, it connects with the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal and the Grand Union Canal. At Perry Locks the level drops by 106 feet. With plentiful public transport it makes an ideal day or half-day walk. Time photo taken not available.
