The large painted sign on the wall looks as though it might date from the 1890s. But it wasn't there in 2012 http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2887078 Perhaps the design was based on some old photograph - but in any case it's an attractive feature of the village scene. As for the hanging sign, my English grandad called that game draughts - I thought 'chequers' was the American name for it. It seems a shame to lose the distinctiveness of English traditions.
