With the construction of the Manchester Ship Canal, sections of the existing railway network had to be rebuilt. Lines which crossed the Canal had to be taken on higher level bridges. The viaduct at Acton Grange carried the lines of both the London North Western Railway Company and the Great Western Railway Company. It now carries the West Coast Main Line over the canal.
