A public open space that occupies the western part of a former field called The Church Mead in Steyning's 1840 tithe map. It was separated from the eastern part initially by the construction of the Shoreham-Christ's Hospital railway in the late 1850s and much later by the opening of the Steyning By-Pass in 1981. The land is located next to Tanyard Stream and was occasionally known to flood in the past and may have been the site of Steyning's medieval port which had silted up by the 12th century.
