The Durham Miners Gala is a mass celebration of the coal mining and Trade Union heritage of the North-East. It is held annually, having taken place nearly every year since 1871. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durham_Miners'_Gala An important element of the occasion is the parading of the banners of the colliery lodges and other organizations. Seen here looking down Saddler Street towards the Market Place.
