Former waterworks building on Bolsover Moor

Now converted into a private residence. In 2002 the wonderful renovation of "The Works" was chronicled by the popular television series "Grand Designs". A programme was dedicated to the mammoth project undertaken by the then owners. In past times the building housed a state of the art filtration and softening plant, the first of its kind in the country. In Victorian times public utility buildings of this type often had very ornate designs but in the early 20th century George Gilbert Scott pioneered more functional industrial designs with structures like Battersea Power Station. The Works has this distinctive functional style of architecture but the 19th century heritage of proud workmanship was still respected with the interior boasting oak joinery and marble terrazzo panelling. Thankfully, the renovations observed by the cameras of "Grand Designs" were sympathetic to the original design and workmanship.
